Typically, the estate planning process takes between 6 and 12 weeks, although it can vary significantly depending on the complexity of the planning involved. During that time, you will typically meet with your attorney 3-4 times to go over your family and financial situation, clarify your intent, and review and sign documents.
At your initial consultation, you will meet with your attorney, who will go over your goals, along with your personal and financial situation, and explain how the law applies to your life. Your attorney will explain the estate planning documents and steps they recommend and provide you with an upfront price for their work. If you choose not to proceed, there is no cost for the consultation.
Four to eight weeks after your initial consultation, you will meet with your attorney to go over the draft documents, which will be forwarded to you for review a week before the appointment. Your attorney will explain the function of each document and check to confirm that they meet with your goals.
Two weeks after your review appointment, you will meet with your attorney to sign all the relevant documents. Your attorney will ensure that all documents are properly notarized or witnessed as required by law. Your attorney will retain the documents until all recordings are complete, at which point you will be contacted to pick everything up.
